20" chain generally hangs about 3-4" below the base of the neck. These estimations are for a women of average to medium frame and height (5' -5'8").
This tends to be a comfortable length for men. A 20" chain on a average framed man standing at (5'5" - 6'1") would hang about 3" below the base of their neck. If a man of this height is larger framed with a larger neck or shoulders, a 20" chain will drop to about 1" below the base of the neck and be more comfortable than an 18".
